Abstract:

BMI View: Germany s water industry is highly developed, evidenced through high drinking water and sewage network connection rates, significant investment and strict drinking water criteria. However, in order to become a water powerhouse, Germany must further improve its overall water quality. ...We highlight that overall investment levels remain muted and major projects will be subject to constrained budgets and strong opposition. Nonetheless we do anticipate some repair work and a moderate level of expansion, particularly of the distribution and sewage networks, as low levels of domestic investment and ageing infrastructure do need to be addressed by the government and utilities. As such, we only expect a moderate boost to growth. ...Both Berliner Wasserbetriebe and Rheinisch-Westfalische Wasserwerksgesellschaft utilities have voiced concerns over the situation. However we anticipate a rise in wastewater discharges over the longer term, in the wake of a government push to encourage less moderate water usage practises in many of its most developed urban areas.

...At present, Germans have some of the lowest per capita water consumption levels among water rich states. Nonetheless, should the new incentives take root, we expect this will increase over the longer term and this is reflected in our forecasts. ...Nonetheless, should the new incentives take root, we expect this will increase over the longer term and this is reflected in our forecasts. In spite of this, at present, we just forecast a moderate -.- annual increase, as until the overall cost of water usage decreases, the rising water tariffs will continue to depress consumption levels. Moreover, as utility costs are largely fixed, declining consumption levels have resulted in higher charges. ...In spite of this, at present, we just forecast a moderate -.- annual increase, as until the overall cost of water usage decreases, the rising water tariffs will continue to depress consumption levels.
