Abstract:

BMI View: Germany s coal sector is one of the largest in Europe and is the main driver of mining activity in the country. Coal output continues to grow courtesy of strong demand for lignite used in the majority of the nation s power plants, however, the industry finds itself increasingly under threat from the rapid development of renewable energy production as well as growing opposition to fossil fuel-based energy production across the EU. These factors are likely to see the relative value of German mining gradually decline over the long-term. ...To make matters worse, the steady increase in coal imports into Germany and other EU states over the past few years will inject increased price competition into the local coal market. US imports to Germany alone have doubled in the five years to ----.

...BMI View: Germany s coal mining sector remains under pressure from various forces, namely the growth of the country s renewable energy industry and growing EU pressure to reduce carbon emissions. That said, German lignite production remains the highest in the EU and, with investment continuing to stream into the industry, looks set to continue growing at a moderate rate over the next few years. ...Pressure on the coal-fired energy sector has increased as the German government has maintained its target of reducing CO- emissions by at least -- of ---- levels by ----. Lignite is the most pollutant energy source in terms of carbon emissions with recent research by a group of European NGOs showing that six of Europe s -- dirtiest thermal-power plants - Neurath, Niederausssem, Janschwalde, Boxberg, Weisweiler and Lippendorf - are located on German soil. While growth in German coal mining will slow over the long-term as newer sources of energy usurp fossil fuels in Germany s power production make-up, we expect output to continue to grow at a modest level through to the end of our forecast period in ----. We forecast the country s total coal production to increase by -.-- year-on-year (y-o-y) in ---- to ---.--mn tonnes (mnt). We expect growth to increase slightly over the medium-term in line with increased economic output and hence demand for energy provision.

...Beyond the coal sector, we expect Germany s iron ore sector to record modest growth in the next five years. Germany s iron ore production totalled -.-mnt in ----, accounting for a fraction of a percent of global output. ...
