Abstract:

We expect the mobile market to reach --.---mn subscribers in ----, of which --.- , or -.---mn, will be using -/-G services. Two clear drivers are present in the Finnish mobile market: the migration of smartphone users towards -G services; and its dedicated mobile broadband market. ...Developments in terms of LTE coverage, through the use of sub--GHz networks and the launch of new services, will help drive the migration. The dedicated mobile broadband market, through the use of dongles, will also benefit from better and wider LTE networks, but it could also be affected by the development of advanced fixed broadband services such as fibre. The Finnish regulator reported that there were -.--mn dedicated mobile broadband connections at the end of ----, compared with -.---mn fixed broadband connections. ...Future mobile termination rates cuts fell by a third in December ----, and this is expected to have a impact on ARPU levels in ----. The decline can be attributed to fixed-to-mobile substitution, which is even stronger in Finland as mobile broadband is at its peak. ...The fixed broadband market has been impacted by mobile broadband, with more dedicated mobile broadband connections than fixed broadband at the end of ----. The development of sub--GHz networks will help the growth of mobile broadband, with operators offering theoretical speeds of ---Mbps, but we believe the development of new services may help advanced fixed broadband services, such as fibre. ...BMI View: Finland has the highest penetration rate in Western Europe, as many users complement their regular mobile phone subscription with a dedicated mobile broadband subscription. However, the Finnish government is trying to stimulate the development of new wireline communications infrastructure by promoting the shared construction and use of electricity and telecommunications infrastructure. ...
