Abstract:

In this quarter s Telecoms Risk/Reward Index, Sub-Saharan Africa s average overall telecoms score declined slightly from --.- in Q--- to --.- out of a possible --- in Q---. Aside from the Industry Risks score, which remained unchanged at --.-, the three other categories all recorded slight declines in their scores. ...As demonstrated in its fairly low average scores, despite Sub-Saharan Africa s massive long term growth prospects, it has one of the lowest regional Telecoms scores globally. This because most countries economies are still developing, and many have high political risk profiles and relatively immature telecoms markets, for example with advanced mobile data and fixed broadband services just beginning to penetrate the region. The biggest changes in rankings on this quarter s Telecoms Risk/Reward Index were in the middle of the table, between those in --th to --th place. ...Despite this shake-up, no country from this segment moved up above --th place or below --th. This trend was replicated across the entire table, with minor shifts in position occurring in the top --, and within the bottom --, but with no countries breaking out of their segment of the table.

We estimate the number of regular internet users in the country was around ---,--- at the end ----, while the number of broadband connections remained below -,---.

...Source: BMI Eritrea has one of the least developed mobile markets in Sub-Saharan Africa, with mobile penetration of just - at the end of ----. BMI estimates there were just ---,--- mobile lines in the country at the end of ----, a growth of --.- y-o-y. Perhaps the most significant hindrance to the development of the country s telecoms and, consequently, mobile sector is tight government regulation and lack of competition to drive growth and investments in the sector. The Eritrean telecoms market is one of the few remaining monopolies in Sub-Saharan Africa. ...
