About This Report

Abstract:

This quarter we maintain our long-held view that consumption and generation will grow only moderately over our forecast period (---------), with capital expenditure (capex) plans for power capacity focusing on the substitution of ageing infrastructure and the acquisition of additional cleaner technologies, rather than on significant expansion of the generating capacity available in the Danish power markets. As part of the oldest electricity market in Europe, Denmark has long enjoyed a privileged position. ...In ---- it had a total turnover of ---TWh (including the auction volume in the UK market N-EX). However, as other European markets move towards greater integration and market coupling, regional players will need to focus on innovation and on appropriate adjustments necessary to cope with the volatile mix of energy brought about by larger shares of renewables. Our near-term outlook for the Denmark non-hydro renewables industry is relatively positive. ...Our near-term outlook for the Denmark non-hydro renewables industry is relatively positive. We expect the country to remain the leader in the region, due to its considerable progress in achieving its target of --- renewable energy by ----.

...Curbed subsidy support for solar power, in the form of annual degressions, coupled with less lucrative electricity repurchase regulation, will curb capacity deployment in Denmark s solar sector over the next five years - ensuring more sustainable growth rates. Denmark will register stable growth in solar power capacity over the next five years overall and we forecast solar capacity to expand by an annual average of -.- between ---- and ----. ...While this entails continued reduction and is still much higher than the EU average, the potential for policy slippage will instil some caution in investors looking to the market. We maintain a robust outlook for biomass power for this quarter as we expect government aims to expand cleaner sources of baseload power, to curb carbon emissions and balance intermittent wind power, will boost growth in the segment. This dynamic will be reinforced by thermal power generators increasingly considering converting their power plants from hydrocarbon feedstock to biomass in order to enter positive margin territory. ...We maintain a robust outlook for biomass power for this quarter as we expect government aims to expand cleaner sources of baseload power, to curb carbon emissions and balance intermittent wind power, will boost growth in the segment. ...BMI View: This quarter our fundamental assumptions for Denmark continue to be relevant. Taking into account positive macroeconomic expectations for the Nordic region as well as sector trends, we continue to expect power consumption growth in ----. ...
