Abstract:

...Nevertheless, a moratorium on shale gas exploration was put in place in the Czech Republic in ---- and is still in place at the time of writing. ...Many Czechs living close to areas affected by mining activities will likely oppose industrial investments and further drilling activities in their region. Moreover, we note that an oppositional stance to shale gas exploration was also adopted by a number of geologists due to the specific geological structures in the Czech Republic, according to a recent Polish- Czech report on shale gas published by the Kosciusko Institute. Nothing therefore indicates significant shale gas reserves could be found and economically produced in the country. ...Nothing therefore indicates significant shale gas reserves could be found and economically produced in the country.

...While the country s shale gas potential could be promising, a moratorium on shale gas exploration and public opposition to the practice make exploration unlikely in the short-to-medium term. The Czech Republic produces negligible volumes of domestic gas or oil, with limited upside risk to future production, meaning the country will remain significantly dependent on Russian hydrocarbon imports within our forecast period. ...The country imports most of its required crude oil from Russia and is a small net importer of refined products. We expect the Czech Republic will continue to be largely dependent on Russian crude imports, while the country will see an increase in refined products net import requirements to answer rising domestic demand over our forecast period. Current production at the Litvinov refinery continues running at a significantly reduced capacity following an explosion at the neighbouring petrochemical complex in August ----. ...We therefore point to downside risk to our ---- refined fuels production estimate and to our ---- forecast. Similarly, this yields upside risk to refined fuel net imports for ---- and ----, and downside risks to net crude oil imports on the back of lower crude oil feed through.

...The country only has small deposits of oil, estimated at --mn barrels (bbl) by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) as of mid ----. Oil deposits are mostly confined to the Vienna-Moravia oil and gas bearing province, in the southwest of the country. ...The largest deposit in the area is called Krusky, and a major part of its oil reserves has already been produced. While exploration has been taking place in the Western Carpathians, an area bordering Austria and Slovakia, by companies such as Moravske Naftove Doly (MND), significant exploration upside and any meaningful increase in the Czech Republic s oil reserves is unlikely. The trend in oil reserves is therefore likely to be no better than flat, with risk of a steady decline. ...
