Abstract:

The impacts of El Nino will continue to be the main drivers of developments in the Colombian power market for the remaining of ----. Its effect on Colombia s hydropower output led us to revise our estimates for power generation in ---- and our forecast in ---- in Q-. The main trend is a sharp fall in hydropower generation, which has forced additional diesel and natural gas- fired power plants to be dispatched, and coal fired generation to be ramped up. While the increase in thermal power generation has had the effect of spiking wholesale power prices and required the government to make regulatory adjustments to generators compensation, the availability of excess thermal capacity dispatchable during periods of poor hydrology as the current one should allow Colombia to avoid experiencing power cuts, albeit narrowly. We forecast total electricity output will reach --.--TWh in ---- - a -.-- annual increase. ...We forecast that between ---- and ---- total power-generating capacity and total electricity generation will increase by an annual average of -.-- and -.-- , respectively. Meanwhile, we forecast power consumption to expand by an annual average of -.-- over the same period.

...BMI View: With the rain finally returning and rivers such as the Magdalena flowing fast again, Colombia appears to be finally getting over the worst. For months Colombia s electricity supply was threatened following a nationwide drought brought on by El Nino that slowed the rivers that power the nation s grid. ...The Minister of Mines and Energy, German Arce Zapata has so far announced that the country will strengthen its electrical system to make it more reliable and efficient against climate phenomena such as El Nino. However, with hydropower currently accounting for -- of the country total generation, we believe that the country will need considerable investments to diversify its energy supply, to meet the increasing demand for power.
