Abstract:

BMI View: Under the --th Five-Year Plan, infrastructure is key to China s national development and regional integration. Greener smart and interconnected city clusters, regional integration, low-carbon public transportation and cleaner water will dominant. ...In recent years China has sought to transform its economic development model from investment-led economic growth to growth driven by consumption. In line with this, while China s --th Five-Year Plan (FYP) identified the expansion of consumption and the improvement of industrial competitiveness as most important priorities, the --th FYP puts a greater emphasis on technology, the Internet of Things, innovation and ecological living. The aim is to shift from big industrial development towards innovation-driven development in order to attain sustainable growth. ...In particular, the plan aims at coordinating regional development, reducing energy intensity and rendering Chinese cities more adapted to increased urban population. We expect infrastructure to play a key role in achieving these goals, which together with the government s plans to attract more private investment, are likely to provide scope for faster growth.

...We forecast China s construction sector to grow by an annual average of -.- between ---- and ---- in real terms, a significant slowdown from the --.- registered between ---- and ----. Railways infrastructure will record strongest growth in ----, reaching - as railway projects are gaining traction. ...While the pipeline of coal-fired power plants in China remains substantial, it will slowly decrease over the long term. This progressive decrease will be due to policy changes by the government to curb the excessive build-up of coal-fired power generation, and gas price reforms.
