Both a relatively dovish monetary policy outlook and continued weakness in global oil prices into ---- will keep downside pressure on the currency. ...In terms of real GDP growth, we currently expect growth of -.- in ---- and -.- in ----, with average annual growth of -.- in ---------. Growth in the construction and infrastructure sectors, which we forecast will expand -.- and -.- on average per annum over the next five years, will also support domestic demand for refined metals consumption.

...BMI View: Canada will remain the largest producer of aluminium in the Americas over the next five years. Furthermore, the country will continue exporting the majority of its domestic production to the US, as well as other destinations. ...Canada will be the top aluminium producer in the Americas to ----, with Rio Tinto remaining the dominant producer in the country. The company has seven wholly owned facilities, as well as minority stakes in the Alouette smelter (-- ) and Becancour smelter (--.- ). For ----, Rio Tinto produced slightly over -.--mnt at its fully- and partially-owned facilities in Canada. This compares to nearly -.--mnt in ---- and -.--mnt in ----. In terms of consumption, macroeconomic fundamentals in both Canada and the US to ---- should drive consumption growth, with the automotive, infrastructure, and aviation sectors all contributing to continued demand for aluminium products.

...BMI View: The Canadian metals sector will be supported in the years ahead by both an eventual recovery in domestic fixed asset investment and continued demand from US and Mexico.
