Abstract:

Cameroon will play an increasingly important role in African iron ore production over the medium term as the Central African country begins to develop its abundant mineral reserves. The country will enjoy high-grade reserves, strong government support and a solid pipeline of infrastructure investment over the coming years. ...However, key projects are making slow progress amid low metals prices. Sundance Resources announced in January ---- that it has postponed the development of its Mbalam-Nabeba iron ore project in Cameroon after China Gezhouba Group Company, selected to build the project s key port and rail infrastructure, did not sign the contract due to low ore prices. China Gezhouba requested to postpone the signing of the USD-bn contract - which was expected to be done in Q--- - until market conditions improve. ...The Cameroonian authorities have started to address infrastructure problems, with several road, port and power projects currently at different stages of construction. Sundance signed Port and Rail Concession Agreements in Cameroon in ----.

...We expect Cameroon to play an increasingly important role in African iron ore production over the next few years as the Central African country begins to develop its abundant mineral reserves following a series of recent discoveries. Despite this, Cameroon will remain in the shadow of more prominent African producers, such as Sierra Leone and Guinea. ...
