Abstract:

In our opinion, the availability of cheap, domestic labour could be a major draw for automakers to set up production facilities in Cambodia in the future. Given reports that Cambodia s manufacturing wages are about a third of that of China, we estimate them to average about USD-,--- per worker annually. ...However, we believe that labour costs are only a part of the bigger issue and automakers will only increase production capacity if there is a sizable domestic market and/or strong export potential in the country. We expect companies to favour exporting vehicles to Cambodia, as opposed to domestic production, with a case in point being the recent tie-up between Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) and Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) to export DICV-made FUSO trucks to Cambodia from India. Given the rather small domestic new car market in Cambodia, automakers investing in Cambodian production need to consider the viability of vehicle exports. ...Given the rather small domestic new car market in Cambodia, automakers investing in Cambodian production need to consider the viability of vehicle exports. While assembling completely knocked down (CKD) kits does not require huge numbers to justify production, having a production plant for completely built units (CBUs) requires larger volumes of production to reap economies of scale and keep costs low.
