Abstract:

The exploration outlook for Bulgaria remains limited with little upside potential. Exploration in the Black Sea holds the greatest opportunity, though progress has taken a hit as low oil prices have disincentivised drilling. ...Drilling is likely to be under way as of August ----, and first results are expected by September, according to Total. The block, located some --km offshore in the Black Sea in water depths of between --- and ---- meters, could hold as much as ---bcm of recoverable natural gas resources, according to the companies exploring it. In April ---- the Bulgarian government retendered two blocks in the Black Sea. ...As announced in February ----, Shell signed a deal for deepwater exploration at the ---- Silistar block, offshore Bulgaria. The five-year permit will see Shell proceed with seismic surveys in the first place.

...Onshore natural gas exploration is seeing less tangible progress. TransAtlantic Petroleum, holder of the Koynare concession, completed pressure testing on the Deventci-- well in H---. ...Exploration along the Koynare fault line in the northwest of Bulgaria may provide some upside from potential condensate discoveries. Similarly limiting for Bulgaria is the continued moratorium on shale gas developments, though low oil prices would most likely postpone developments for the coming few years even if exploration was possible. There have been calls from some factions, including the mining industry, to overturn the hydraulic fracturing ban. ...Similarly limiting for Bulgaria is the continued moratorium on shale gas developments, though low oil prices would most likely postpone developments for the coming few years even if exploration was possible. Gasoline and diesel production increased over -- in ---- following the completion of Lukoil s new heavy residue complex. ...
