Abstract:

Business Monitor International Ltd Page -- market access - we believe the US is likely to be the biggest winner given that it does not currently have a free trade agreement with Japan, which is one of the most important agricultural importers within the TPP bloc. Over the past decade Australia has become increasingly leveraged to China s growth story, and remains highly vulnerable to another leg down in Chinese growth. ...Net exports contributed -.- percentage point (pp) to Australia s Q- ---- headline real GDP growth, which was the major factor for the growth acceleration. The positive contribution from the external sector can be attributed to the temporary stabilisation of the Chinese economy in Q- ---- on the back of a cyclical pick- up in fixed investment in the domestic real estate sector, a scenario that had not played out when we released last quarter s Australia freight report. That said, we believe that Chinese demand for Australia s exports is unlikely to remain strong over the coming quarters as we expect the Chinese economy to weaken further amid structural weaknesses including overcapacity and high debt levels in the industrial sectors, particularly in inefficient state-owned firms. Meanwhile, Australia s terms of trade experienced a further deterioration in Q- ----, keeping its trade deficit wide in nominal terms. We believe that Australia s terms of trade is unlikely to improve significantly anytime soon, particularly as our Commodities team expects iron ore and thermal coal prices to remain subdued as they remain under pressure from an oversupplied market (see Iron Ore: Chinese Stimulus Only

...Australia s exports are projected to comfortably surpass imports in terms of y-o-y growth in ----, with imports set to contract by -.- per year and exports set to increase by -.- . This will result in total trade (real growth) coming in at -.- in ----. ...The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) has asked the government to act on the findings of the Infrastructure Australia ---Year Plan within its first -- days of office with the aim of creating a long- term approach to the country s supply chains, thus enhancing delivery of freighted goods, Logistics and Materials Handling reported in August ----. The managing director of ALC, Michael Kilgariff, declared: The development of a National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy, which would incorporate the various, interlinked components of our national and international supply chains, was one of the high-level recommendations contained in Infrastructure Australia s ---Year Plan released earlier this year. Australian trade minister Steven Ciobo visited Colombia in August ---- to initiate negotiations over a potential free trade agreement, according to Colombia Reports. Aside from this, Ciobo was also looking into the possibility of enhancing trade links with Chile during his trip to South America. ...The managing director of ALC, Michael Kilgariff, declared: The development of a National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy, which would incorporate the various, interlinked components of our national and international supply chains, was one of the high-level recommendations contained in Infrastructure Australia s ---Year Plan released earlier this year. ...We continue to believe that Australia will remain a key agricultural powerhouse due to several factors. Firstly, there is a large and increasing surplus of commodities such as grains, beef, dairy and sugar, which are in high demand, with the air shipment of perishables set to benefit as a result. ...
