Abstract:

< ALACRA META ABSTRACT>BMI View: Argentina remains locked in a condition of economic malaise. President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner will leave office at the end of ---- and at the time of writing in early ---- there is no significant prospect of the country s economy improving. ...Argentina s armed forces have, for several years, maintained a long list of requirements which are necessary to modernise their armed forces. These requirements are not tied to endowing the army, navy and air force with a future-proof posture which will enable them to fight the conflicts of tomorrow and prevail with technological superiority, but aimed at bringing them up to a standard that would be considered modern and capable for today s conflicts. During ----, the defence budget is expected to increase once more. ...While we expect the defence budget to increase, the Argentine armed forces will experience an increasing level of materiel obsolescence. This is because the longer that major procurement decisions such as the purchase of new MRCAs or the procurement of new frigates and destroyers to replace obsolete naval vessels are delayed, the more

...Over the past decade the numerical size of the Argentine armed forces has fluctuated between ---,--- and ---,--- personnel. The reasons for this fluctuation remains unclear, although it may be a consequence of the armed forces appearing to offer young people a more attractive career in the midst of the country s economic woes and unemployment levels. ...
