Abstract:

Algerian economic activity will face headwinds throughout the coming years, primarily as a result of the continuing slump in global energy prices - the most influential determinant of the country s growth performance. We do not expect a turnaround in oil prices anytime soon, and the weakness of Algeria s main source of export earnings and government revenue will undermine macroeconomic stability, force a decline in public spending and weigh on the economy. ...Algerian economic activity will face headwinds throughout the coming years, primarily as a result of the continuing slump in global energy prices - the most influential determinant of the country s growth performance. We do not expect a turnaround in oil prices anytime soon, and the weakness of Algeria s main source of export earnings and government revenue will undermine macroeconomic stability, force a decline in public spending and weigh on the economy. However, the country retains sufficient financial buffers to avoid a dramatic fiscal adjustment, and the next few years are likely to see weak - but positive growth rather than a full economic crisis. ...Combined with weaker consumer confidence and the government s efforts to limit imports, we expect private consumption growth to be more subdued than in previous years, adding to the drag on the Algerian economy. Favourable demographics and the state s support to household incomes will help to prop up consumer goods purchases throughout the coming decade, and we forecast private consumption to reach --.- of GDP by

North Africa provides multinationals with a low-cost production base for exports within the continent, as well as access to the large regional market. Local players can benefit from joint ventures with foreign companies. ...Soft drinks also enjoy considerable popularity thanks to the region s hot climate and sizeable tourism industry. Low degree of market saturation, with numerous small-scale independent retailers dominating the grocery market.

...With the population projected to grow from --.-mn in ---- to --.-mn in ----, the domestic consumer market will remain the second-largest in North Africa (behind Egypt) over the long term. That said, the slump in oil prices will continue to have negative repercussions for consumer confidence and present a risk to household purchasing power. The government has partly relied on currency depreciation to compensate for the fall in oil revenue, while taking steps to limit imports of such consumer goods such as computers and vehicles. Overall, we expect private consumption to remain fairly resilient, but growth will slow from the levels observed over the past decade (-.- in ---- and -.- in ----, compared to an annualised rate of -.- between ---- and ----). ...
