Abstract:

The 2018 global corporate default tally rose to 49 after one confidential issuer from the emerging markets region defaulted this week. Although the overall global default tally is lower than it was at the same point in 2017, defaults in the emerging markets have tripled so far in 2018, at 10, compared with just three in the same period last year. Amid recent interest rate hikes and a stronger dollar, companies in the emerging markets may face increasing pressure as investors potentially shift their allocation of risk assets from emerging markets to higher-yielding alternatives in developed markets.
