| Abstract: | Not surprisingly, the smaller regional banks in Standard&Poor's Ratings Services' rated universe generally posted weak second-quarter results. Higher loan-loss provisions continue to affect earnings as the banks prepare for recessionary pressures and the continuation of loan-quality problems through 2008 and into 2009. For most of the banks, nonperforming loans and net loan charge-offs continued to increase with no signs yet of reversing. Importantly though, as we expected, we are seeing asset quality trends for individual banks beginning to diverge, with some banks faring much better than others. This is mainly based on a bank's loan-mix risks, loan underwriting quality, and the relative resilience of its local real estate markets. Notably, many of these particular banks have so far
