| Abstract: | The major European banks are showing diverging trends as they deal with the aftermath of a global repricing of risk, the unwind of overheated property and debt markets, testing funding conditions, and the prospects of greater macroeconomic uncertainty. Despite a range of major European banks having reported strong profits for 2007 as a whole, others reported poor results on the back of the fallout from the U.S. subprime market problems, and there are signs of wider pressures in some businesses. 2008 will clearly be a demanding year for much of the sector.
