| Abstract: | Western films depict the American frontier as an untamed place, devoid of civilization, where only the strongest and bravest dared to venture. For a long time, the same metaphor applied to frontier markets: Small and less liquid emerging markets only attracted investors with a healthy appetite for risk. That, however, may be changing. The term "frontier markets" was coined in 1995 at the International Finance Corp. (IFC) as a way to define the smaller, shallow markets--frequently those with less than $1 billion in total market capitalization and as few as a dozen stock exchange listings.
