Abstract: Thanks to decades of deregulation in the financial sector and the increased intertwining of financial markets around the world, the current global economic turmoil will almost certainly result in fundamental changes in the way markets operate and businesses raise capital. Standard&Poor's Ratings Services believes any return to relative stability and renewed growth will involve greater regional and global coordination in banking and securities oversight. We expect governments to reverse a long trend of deregulation and privatization in the financial services sector, strengthening their sway with lenders to unlock credit markets and help prevent future freezes.
