| Abstract: | The sheer number of recent crises at sizeable financial institutions has raised investor interest regarding how resilient sovereign ratings are likely to be as governments have to absorb more and more banks with impaired balance sheets. Several weeks ago Standard&Poor's Ratings Services commented on the outlook for the U.S. sovereign rating following its bail-out packages for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (see "Credit FAQ: What Could Change Our 'AAA' Credit Rating On The U.S. Government?" published Sept. 2, 2008, on RatingsDirect). As the banking crisis has crossed the Atlantic, similar questions are now also being raised in Europe.
