...In Moody's view, over the past decade Tunisia has impressively withstood the impact of multiple adverse challenges:unfavourable weather conditions, high oil prices, the expiration of the World Trade Organisation's MultifibreAgreement, and weak economic growth in Europe, its main export market. Tunisia has been outperforming its neighbouring countries in northern Africa both by pushing textile productionup the value-added chain and by developing auto assembly and food processing industries. In addition, the servicesector, especially tourism, has been helping to grow and to revive the economy, whilst foreign direct investment intoTunisia has been increasing - mainly from European countries, especially France, Italy and Spain. ...

...For the third consecutive year, GDP growth in 2004 was above 5% due to strong performances of the agricultural, tour- ism and telecommunications sectors. The country has been gr owing over the last decade by an annual average of 5% except in 2002 on account of four years of consecutive dr oughts and September 11 2001 as well as the April 2002 bomb- ing in Djerba. The economy needs to grow at an average rate of at least 6% through 2006 in order to absorb new workers entering the national workforce from the ranks of Tunisia' s large population of young people. Tunisia has started its demographic transition earlier than ot her North African countries with the number of entrants on the labor market expected to begin to decrease after 2006. Nevertheless, un employment is still high at around 13.9%. Unemployment is still one of the main issues for the country with 43,000 out of 80,000 young unemployed holding diplomas. ...
