...The US electric utility sector is in the early stages of a massive new construction period to address its future base-load capacity needs. Given the practical realities associated with elec tric supplies, environmental trends and national energy security, we believe the sector will focus a considerable amount of attention on buil ding new nuclear generation. According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), there are approximately 12 companies developin g 17 Construction and Operating License (COL) applications for 31 new reac tors. Other sources, such as the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), count approximately 17 companies developing 21 COL applications for up to 31 new reactors. While we do not incorporate a view that all 31 reactors will be built, we observe that many companies have already begun to pre-condition their selected sites, and several have entered into arrangements with vendors to procure long-lead time items.
