...U.S. consumer products companies will face harsh business conditio ns in 2009, driven by poor global economic prospects. Fitch Ratings expects the world economy to enter a severe recession. The performance of the U .S. economy will significantly affect global growth in 2009 and this does not bode well for consumer product companies primarily in the discretionary, durable space. Fitch expects margins and free cash flow to continue trending downward in 2009 exacerbated by a weakening global economy. Companies dependent on discretionary spendi ng will continue experiencing profit and cash flow deterioration. Credit protection measures should weaken modestly. Given these dynamics, Fitch expects industry participants to be focused on operations and liquidity and less on shareholder-friendly activities. Companies are grappling with high levels of commodity costs in inventor ies and a negative drag from currencies on the top line due to the very recent appr eciation of the U.S....
