...President Barack Obama has placed a high priority on health care-related issues as he enters the first year of his presidency. To that end, he needs to fill related cabinet and agency positions to move his initiatives through the legislative process. On March 2, 2009, the president nominated Kathleen Sebelius, the governor of Kansas, to be the secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), and Nancy-Ann DeParle to be the director of the White House Office for Health Reform. Nominations for Food and Drug Administration (FDA) commissioner and surgeon general have not yet been announced. The November 2008 elections provided the Democratic Party with control of the White House and increased its majorities in both houses of Congress. However, the party remains one or two seats shy of the 60 votes needed to prevent a Republican filibuster in the Senate (if voting tracks solely along political party lines).
