...The ratings of Banca Popolare dell Emilia\01Romagna (BPER) reflect the strong local franchise of each individual bank in the group as well as the group s position as third\01largest cooperative bank in Italy. They also take into account pressure on profitability in the current environment, relatively weak asset quality, the higher risk inherent in its southern Italian presence and inefficiencies in its group structure. The bank is based in Emilia\01Romagna in northern Italy but has a widespread presence in central and southern regions through past acquisitions of majority stakes i n a number of small cooperative banks, mostly weak or badly performing but generally with a strong local franchise. BPER s aim now is to simplify the group s structure, merging its subsidiaries to generate synergies and cost savings. In addition, the bank aims to rationalise its participation in the cooperative sector s specialist product companies....
