INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS: Singapore continues to play an active role in the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), and its successful hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in November 2009 has bolstered its international standing. Relations with Malaysia, Singapore's largest trading partner, are likely to remain cordial. The Malaysian prime minister, Najib Razak, appears keen to strengthen economic ties, and in an official visit to Singapore last May he proposed that another bridge be constructed linking the city state to the southern Malaysian state of Johor. However, a degree of racially tinged wariness is likely to persist between the two countries, despite Mr Najib's desire for stronger economic ties.
