DOMESTIC POLITICS: The ruling PAICV and Prime Minister Neves will focus their energies on tackling rising levels of crime by strengthening the security and justice apparatus---rising crime has been one of the main reasons for the government's decline in popularity in the past two years. The government will not experience major difficulties in passing the relevant legislation, since it has a clear majority in the National Assembly. The main opposition party, Movimento para a Democracia (MPD), will attempt to take advantage of the economic slowdown by blaming the government for its effects, and will continue to accuse PAICV members of corruption and illegal property deals.
