Westmoreland Coal Company (WCC) is an energy company that mines coal used in producing electric power and owns interests in power-generating plants. The Company owns five mines, which supply power plants. Several of these power plants are located adjacent to its mines. The Company sells virtually all its coal under multi-year contracts. WCC owns the Roanoke Valley (ROVA) independent power project. ROVA consists of two coal-fired units with a total generating capacity of 230 megawatts. ROVA supplies power pursuant to long-term contracts. WCC sold 29.3 million tons of coal during the year ended December 31, 2008. The Absaloka Mine is owned by the Company’s subsidiary, Westmoreland Resources, Inc. (WRI). The Beulah, Jewett, Rosebud and Savage Mines are owned by its separate subsidiary, Westmoreland Mining LLC (WML). All of these mines are surface mines, which involves extracting coal that lies close to the surface.
