The Group's principal activity is to operate retail food and drug stores, multi-department stores, jewelry and convenience stores in the Midwestern, Southern and Western portions of the United States. It also manufactures and processes food for sale by its supermarkets. Supermarkets are generally operated under one of the following formats: combination food and drug stores; multi-department stores; or price impact warehouse stores. The convenience stores offer a limited assortment of staple food items and general merchandise and sell gasoline. The Group's brand products are produced and sold in three quality tiers. They include Private Selection, banner brand and FMV. The Group operates solely in the domestic market. As on 31-Jan-2009, the Group operated 2,481 supermarkets and multi-department stores in the United States which include 684 convenience stores, 385 fine jewelry stores and 781 Supermarket fuel centers.
