The Group's principal activity is to provide universal banking and financial services. The Bank operates through its branch office network of 660 branches in 21 countries. Handelsbanken Markets operates money and foreign exchange markets, trade finance and banking operations outside the Nordic countries and economic research. Handelsbanken Securities deals with corporate finance, equity sales and trading. Handelsbanken Asset Management is involved in fund management, discretionary management and custody services. Handelsbanken Pension and Insurance provides life insurance products. Handelsbanken Finans provides finance company services in the Nordic countries. Stadshypotek Bank is involved in bank and insurance services. Handelsbanken Treasury manages the Group's Swedish kronor liquidity and funding in the capital markets. In 2008, the Group opened 44 new branches and acquired Lokalbanken i Nordsjaelland A/S in Denmark.
