The Group's principal activity is to operate food and drug retail stores in North America. Its retail operations has network of distribution, manufacturing and food processing facilities stores that offer selection of food and general merchandise. The stores provide dry grocery items, food and general merchandise and a variety of specialty departments such as bakery, delicatessen, floral and pharmacy. As of 31-Dec-2008 the Group operates through 1,739 stores in the United States and Canada. The United States retail operations are located principally in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, the Chicago metropolitan area and the Mid-Atlantic region. The Canadian retail operations are located principally in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba/Saskatchewan. The Group holds a 49% ownership interest in Casa Ley SA de CV which operates 146 food and general merchandise stores in Western Mexico.
