SMT Scharf AG is a Germany-based Company that builds and maintains rail-bound railway systems for mining and use in tunnels and for transport of personnel, equipment and materials. It products are used primarily in hard coal mines, as well as underground mining for platinum, gold and other metals. They are used to transport material and personnel with working loads of up to 35 tons. The Company also is engaged in research and development activities. The Company offers monorails, duorails, chairlifts and cable handling systems, among others, as well as logistics and installation services, among others. As of December 31, 2009, the Company had nine wholly owned subsidiaries in Germany, Poland, South Africa, Russian Federation, Estonia and China. In May 2010, SMT Scharf AG acquired Dosco Overseas Engineering Ltd. and Hollybank Engineering Co. Ltd. from Billington Holdings plc.
