RailAmerica, Inc. (RailAmerica) owns and operates short line and regional freight railroads in North America. Its principal operations consist of rail freight transportation and ancillary rail services. During the year ended December 31, 2011, its railroads transported approximately 840,000 carloads of freight for approximately 1,500 customers, hauling a range of products, such as farm and food products, lumber and forest products, paper and paper products, metals, chemicals and coal. On May 11, 2011, the Company acquired three short-line freight railroads in the state of Alabama. In May 2012, it acquired Marquette Rail LLC. RailAmerica owns and operates short-line and regional freight railroads in North America, operating a portfolio of 45 individual railroads with approximately 7,500 miles of track in 28 states in the United States and three Canadian provinces.
