| The Group's principal activity is to provide long-term savings and retirement products in the United States. The Group is a holding company for Nationwide Life Insurance Company and other companies that comprise the domestic life insurance and retirement savings operations. The operations are carried on through four segments: Individual Investments, Retirement Plans, Individual Protection and Corporate and Other. These products are marketed by unaffiliated entities such as independent broker and dealers, financial institutions, wirehouse and regional firms, pension plan administrators, life insurance specialists and representatives of certain CPA firms. Affiliated entities selling the Group's products include Nationwide Retirement Solutions Inc, The 401(k) Company, TBG Insurance Services Corporation, NFN producers and Nationwide agents. In 2007, the group acquired the Philadelphia based retail asset management operations of NWD Investment Management Inc. |
