The Group's principal activities are to mine, process and sell bituminous, low sulfur, steam and industrial grade coal through six operating subsidiaries located throughout eastern Kentucky and in southern Indiana. It operates in two segments: Central Appalachia and the Midwest. As of 31- Dec - 2008, its six mining complexes included 17 underground mines, 14 surface mines and ten preparation plants, five of which have integrated rail loadout facilities and three of which use a common loadout facility at a separate location.
