The Group's principal activity is operating railroad networks in North America. As on 31-Dec-2008, it operates in about 32,000 route miles covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. Approximately 9,000 route miles of BNSF Railway's system consist of trackage rights that permit BNSF Railway to operate its trains with its crews over other railroads' tracks. It also manages its investment in its principal and wholly-owned subsidiary. The BNSF railway transports a wide range of products and commodities including the transportation of consumer products, industrial products, coal, metals, minerals, automobiles and automobile parts and agricultural products derived from manufacturing and natural resource industries.
