The Group's principal activity is the retail distribution of books. It operates both superstores and traditional bookstores primarily in the southeastern United States. The Group operates through two segments: retail trade and electronic commerce trade. In the retail trade segment it is engaged in the retail sale of book merchandise at its retail stores. In the electronic commerce trade segment it is engaged in the retail sale of book merchandise over the Internet. In addition to the retail store formats, the Group offers its products over the Internet at www.booksamillion.com. During fiscal 2009, the it opened sixteen stores, closed four stores and relocated seven stores. As of 31-Jan-2009, the Group operated 200 superstores.
