The Group's principal activities are mining, processing and marketing compliance and low-sulfur coal from surface and deep mines located in the eastern and the western United States, enabling it to ship coal to domestic coal-fired electric generation facilities. The Group operates in three business segments: Central Appalachia (CAPP) segment, with operations in southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and Virginia; Powder River Basin (PRB) segment with operations in Wyoming and Western Bituminous (WBIT) segment, with operations in Utah, Colorado and southern Wyoming.
